Our Method

Calculating carbon emissions for any activity is a complex exercise. We made our calculations by utilizing emissions data provide by the Environmental Protection Agency and sequestration data provided by the State of Hawai‘i Greenhouse Gas Emissions Task Force.

We averaged the metric tons of CO2 equivalent pollutants emitted (by activity type and distance) and absorbed (by native koa forest restoration), and the result was a dollar amount per distance traveled, gallons of gas used, or the cost of planting one koa tree.

If you’d more details about the calculations, please contact us at info@hico2.org.

For a detailed analysis about the carbon storage potential of Hawai‘i’s native forest, here’s a report that may interest you: Report to the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Task Force.
